Partnerships for Training: Regional Education Systems for Nurse Practitioners, Certified Nurse-Midwives, and Physician Assistants

The Foundation's program, Partnerships for Training: Regional Education Systems for Nurse Practitioners, Certified Nurse-Midwives, and Physician Assistants, was designed to address shortages of primary care practitioners in medically underserved areas through development of innovative regional education models for nurse practitioners, certified nurse-midwives, and physicians assistants that emphasize training these new professionals within their own communities.Duke and East Carolina University have formed a primary partnership and have brought several other key partners, including Pembroke State University, the Fayetteville and Eastern Area Health Education Centers (AHECs) and a variety of community hospitals into their consortium. The consortium plans to: (1) develop a relationship that can support the first use of the new curricula in the two AHEC areas and then develop a partnership that includes the state's other academic medical centers and AHECs; (2) develop curricula for the collaborative training of Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, and Certified Nurse-Midwives and for training of community faculty and preceptors; (3) cultivate community-based clinical sites; (4) work with the partners to identify and recruit a student body that models the diversity of students that the new programs are intended to serve; (5) develop the information and communication systems and support needed to use curricula designed to teach people in place; and (6) design a funding arrangement most likely to succeed over the long term. They also plan to develop a hub and spoke model for delivering these education programs.
