Assessment and treatment to people with bomb-related mental health problems

This project addresses the mental health needs of victims of the April 19, 1995, bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. There are developing circumstances of critical and immediate need associated with the more persistent presentation of clinical symptoms consistent with diagnoses of post-traumatic depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. In particular, two high-risk groups have emerged: (1) rescue workers and their families; and (2) direct victims of the bombing who share in common minimal or no coverage for mental health treatment. It is anticipated that as many as 50 percent of those who experienced both a life threat and injury will experience long-term sequelae requiring treatment for which they may be unable to pay. Most of the literature on post-traumatic stress disorder suggests that failure to intervene early with frequent therapy and appropriate medication will simply exacerbate the duration and intensity of the problem.
