Research to improve breast cancer screening among urban American Indian women

"Breast Cancer Screening Among Urban American Indian Women" is a three and one-half year project which has the goal of changing the behavior of underserved, urban Native American women through the implementation of a culturally competent outreach intervention. There have been two earlier phases to this project that have succeeded in developing much of the plans for the intervention. Phase III, which will be supported by Foundation funding for the first year, will entail the implementation of the culturally appropriate screening and service system at three Native American health care agencies in Denver and Los Angeles. The results of this implementation will then be compared to the results of the standard (not culturally specific) screening system that has been in place for the last two years. This research project is unique in that no other project, up until now, has combined the development, testing, and evaluation of a culturally appropriate health care delivery system within the same project.
