Reach Out: Physicians' Initiative to Expand Care to Underserved Americans

The Foundation's program, Reach Out: Physicians' Initiative to Expand Care to Underserved Americans, was designed to challenge private physicians, working with health departments, hospitals, mid-level practitioners, state agencies, and others, to expand their role in the provision of care to the underserved in their communities. This is one of 18 second phase planning grants made under Reach Out: Physicians Initiative to Expand Care to Underserved Americans. The purpose of the program is to challenge private physicians to expand their role in the provision of care to the underserved in their communities. The Church Health Center of Memphis, Inc., in collaboration with The Memphis and Shelby County Medical Society has designed this project to provide affordable quality health care to the uninsured working poor and to serve as a "safety net" system. Grant funds will make possible expansion of an already existing network of volunteer physicians who are providing affordable care to patients in Memphis, Tennessee, and its surroundings. This grant provides support to the grantee to achieve the following tasks during the one-year grant period: (1) develop a community advisory group of local physicians, hospitals and human service organizations to jointly monitor and advise the program; (2) recruit physicians, employers, and patients to participate in the program, and begin to provide services to new patients; (3) develop and implement a media/public relations campaign and marketing plan to bring publicity to the program; and (4) implement a reward system for physicians. Physicians will have the opportunity to serve at the Church Health Center or in their private offices. It is expected that approximately 600 patients will receive care during this grant period.
