The Foundation's Generalist Provider Research Initiative was designed to support a series of research projects to identify, analyze, and assess the opportunities and constraints that determine the current generalist/specialist mix and distribution that affect various efforts to generate change.The purpose of this project is a study to compare the activities of sixteen mid-level practitioners/resident physicians pairs in two major hospitals through log diary analysis and analysis of the medical record. The goals of this project are guided by the following questions: (1) What are the tasks performed and patient care activities mid-level practitioners engage in as compared to resident physicians caring for similar patients? and (2) Is there a difference in clinical outcomes between patients with mid-level practitioners as principal care providers compared with those whose principal care providers are resident physicians?
