The Foundation's program, Colleagues in Caring: Collaboratives for Nursing Work Force Development, was designed to support nursing service institutions to initiate concerted work force development systems within their regions. The purpose of this project is to enable the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), Washington, D.C.., to administer the national program office for the Foundation's Regional Nursing Workforce Initiative. The purpose is to enhance the capacity of the nation's nursing workforce to adapt to the rapid and unprecedented changes occurring in the American health care system. The program will concentrate on specific geographic labor markets in nursing care. It will feature the development of regional consortium of nursing schools designed to: (1) enable individual nurses to pursue a continuum of education throughout their professional careers, from the LPN to the doctorate; (2) prepare RNs for the range of regional service needs (long-term care, chronic care, and primary care, as well as acute care); and (3) develop a regional cadre of RNs for leadership roles as clinicians, educators, and service managers.
