The Foundation's program, Practice Sights: State Primary Care Development Strategies, was designed to challenge states--through collaborations among state agencies, communities, provider groups, and health professionals schools--to improve the distribution of primary care providers in medically underserved areas. This is a technical assistance and direction grant in its fourth year which will provide intensive and comprehensive technical assistance to the grantee states in order to help them implement their approved Phase II plans. Each grantee will be visited by the National Program Office (NPO) site teams whose members have various expertise that will provide valuable assistance to the sites. Additionally, two nationally focused technical assistance workshops will be held which will focus on implementation issues, such as recruitment and retention, financial and practice management, network development, managed care, state-based health reform, training issues, and loan fund development. Because of the continued interest of nongrantee states in the progress of Practice Sights, the NPO will explore efforts to disseminate information concerning the program to those non participating states. The project will continue to conduct outreach to other related Foundation initiatives such as Generalist Physician Initiative, State Initiatives for Health Finance Reform, and Information for State Health Policy programs. Phase II of this project will see the development of many model programs that will lead to the strengthening of primary care capacity in many high-need communities and states.
