The Foundation's Changes in Health Care Financing and Organization program was designed to support research, demonstration, and evaluation projects examining major changes in health care financing. The purpose of this project is to study the effects of alternative methods of individual physician compensation by managed care organizations on the primary care physician's clinical efficiency in managing episodes of care for common health conditions. The grantee will investigate how the primary care physician's efficiency as an "event manager" (the episode of care for a given condition) is influenced by how he or she is compensated. They will also illuminate the "black box" of organizational arrangements and activities that influence physician practice to produce an understanding of how groups transmute the payments they receive from health plans into individual compensation. The data to be used in the study will be collected directly from the managed care organizations.
