The Foundation's Generalist Physician Faculty Scholars Program was designed to strengthen the presence of generalist physician faculty in the nation's medical schools through career development awards to outstanding junior faculty in medical school departments/divisions of family medicine, general internal medicine and general pediatrics.This grant enables Michael J. Fine, M.D., to look at community acquired pneumonia (CAP). During the first year, he will define the optimal length of stay and evaluate the relationship between the length of stay and medical care costs for patients. He will then combine this research with his PORT related efforts. In the second year, he will continue his work on defining the optimal length of stay and the relationship between the length of stay and costs. During the third year, he will initiate a clinical trial that will look at the effectiveness of disseminating information to decrease the length of stay in patients with CAP. During the final year, he will conduct a clinical trial and develop new focus research projects based on the findings of the pneumonia PORT.
