This grant provides partial support to continue a project by Derek Bok, former president of Harvard University, to analyze the underlying causes of domestic policy gridlock in this country and to develop recommendations for how the problem might be more effectively addressed. Professor Bok will concentrate on: (1) an assessment of how well the nation, and in particular the government, has performed over the past several decades in addressing a range of domestic policy areas such as health care, energy, housing, and education; and (2) an investigation of the underlying reasons for the difficulties in moving forward where those difficulties have occurred. The project has received co-funding from the MacArthur and Rockefeller Foundations, and continued partial support from these sources is anticipated for the next 12 months.
