Project to reduce substance abuse among pregnant and postpartum women

This grant supports the initiation of voluntary self-help groups for women receiving prenatal care through the local health department in high-need areas of Orange County, Florida. The program is expected to: (1) increase availability and accessibility of prevention, early intervention, and treatment services for substance-using and at-risk pregnant and postpartum women and their infants; (2) reduce the incidence and prevalence of substance use among pregnant women; (3) improve birth outcomes and reduce infant mortality among women who use alcohol and other drugs during pregnancy; and (4) reduce the incidence of abuse and neglect among children of substance-using mothers. One third (1,000) of the health department maternity clients will participate in the project by the end of year 2. Foundation funds will be used for salaries, local staff travel, office supplies and project monitoring expenses. Over $300,000 will be contributed to the budget annually by the Orange County Public Health Unit and Alcohol, Drug Abuse, and Mental Health funds. If this project successfully meets its objectives for the first two years, the Foundation will be approached for an additional two-year grant to expand the project to serve all maternity patients in the public health system.
