Evaluating alternative health care delivery model for teaching hospitals

The Foundation's Changes in Health Care Financing and Organization program was designed to support research, demonstration, and evaluation projects examining major changes in health care financing.The purpose of this project is a study to conduct a randomized controlled trial (RCT) of the impacts on cost and quality of the Collaborative Care Model implemented at University Hospitals of Cleveland in July 1989. To conduct the study, the grantee will: (1) randomly assign 1,350 primary care patients either to the Collaborative Care unit and/or a traditional hospital unit with housestaff; and (2) collect and analyze data on a broad range of parameters including resource use, rates of adverse hospital events, discharge health status, patient satisfaction, nursing job satisfaction, and collaborative practice/organizational environment of care. The objective of this project is to provide solid evidence of a model of care which will increase efficiency of teaching hospitals and could ultimately position them to maintain or expand services to underserved populations.
