Technical assistance for a new state tracking system for substance-exposed newborns

This grant supports technical assistance for the development of a model statewide computerized tracking system to enable public health nurses to more effectively provide, coordinate, and monitor services to substance-exposed infants and their families. Data from this system will also be used for epidemiologic surveillance, policy research, and evaluation of ongoing procedures. Consultants will include a group from Cleveland State University which has been funded by The National Institute on Drug Abuse to develop state-of-the-art software for case management of substance-abusing pregnant women and their infants, and the ABC Corporation of Tampa to assist in development of special technical features of the system. The Florida Department of Health, under the leadership of Dr. Charles Mahan, is leading the way in the development of a statewide response to the needs of substance-exposed infants and their families. This system is, therefore, likely to be of interest to other states facing the same problem. However, because Florida's public health system is more centralized than many other states, this may be more easily implemented in Florida than elsewhere.
