Research on birth outcomes among Mexican women in Chicago

The purpose of this project is to explore factors associated with intergenerational differences in birth outcomes among Mexican families in Chicago. Interviews will be conducted among 80 Mexican mothers who delivered an infant in Chicago in the preceding year, in an attempt to explore other factors that may explain these differences. It is expected that these pilot findings will offer practical suggestions for improving birth outcomes of Latino women in Chicago, as well as improve our understanding of the factors that appear to protect first generation Mexican immigrants from low birthweight. The project also will assist program development focused on overcoming socio cultural and organizational barriers to health care. Findings will be disseminated through special reports to health agencies involved in the study and in journal publications. Such information will further scientific debate concerning the contributions of certain risk factors to low birthweight, thereby suggesting improvements in health care delivery for all women.
