This grant provides support to implement MELD's program, which will combine a recognized self-help support program for teen parents with existing school-based youth services in 15 high schools in New Jersey. At least three new sites will be initiated each year, and an estimated 2,500 parenting students will be served during the grant period. The program expects to demonstrate a new, potentially more effective model of school-based services for teen parents. Foundation funds will be used primarily for training and technical assistance, which will be provided by MELD and, through a subcontract by the New Jersey Chapter of the National Committee for the Prevention of Child Abuse. Limited Foundation funds ($5,500 per site) will also be used for expenses incurred by the participating programs. Once the projects have been established (approximately two years after startup), external training and technical assistance needs will be sharply reduced and will be assumed by the State.
