Implementing a substance abuse intervention program in senior housing

The purpose of this project is to provide substance abuse education and treatment for elderly residents of subsidized housing and to leverage funds from operating revenues through reduced insurance premiums. In addition, this project will assist housing owners and managers in recognizing undetected cases of chemical dependencies and coordinate existing treatment resources. The grantee will subcontract with four hospitals that provide inpatient and intensive outpatient programs to provide services such as: (1) preventive education for senior residents and their families, housing professionals, service providers and physicians; (2) development of treatment referral systems; and (3) development of peer support groups for seniors who have received treatment. Managers of senior housing will receive assistance in recognizing and effectively addressing substance abuse issues in their complexes. The New Hampshire Housing Finance Authority will also develop a plan to leverage funds from housing operating revenues by negotiating with insurance providers for reduced rates in participating complexes.
