Elementary school programs to prevent substance abuse and other problems

The purpose of this project is to enable 14 elementary schools in 4 New Jersey cities (Perth Amboy, New Brunswick, Newark, and Asbury Park) to develop school-wide programs (K-6) for the prevention of the onset of substance abuse and other problem behaviors. The Social Problem Solving (SPS) unit at UMDNJ plans to establish social learning and related decision making as a basic component of education in all elementary grades. Schools in other states will be selected on the basis of their interest in teaching social problem solving, particularly as expressed in the work of their faculty who attended previous in-service workshops on this approach. Training for this program will consist of an advanced-level course taught by the University's SPS unit three times annually and implementation will be a one-year preceptorship at the trainee's sending school also done by the staff of UMDNJ's SPS unit. Preceptorial and technical assistance will be offered on a regular basis to out-of-state schools as well. When fully implemented, social problem solving at each school will involve a weekly session for every grade throughout the school year. At a pilot school in Perth Amboy regular communications between school personnel and parents resulted in a "Saturday School" program for parents and children to meet informally with school staff.
