This ad hoc project will develop and implement teaching modules which evaluate TV and print media messages promoting alcohol and tobacco products in the middle schools. These modules will enable students to: (1) evaluate the impact of the media on their decision making; (2) recognize commercial marketing techniques targeted to youth; (3) apply critical thinking skills to all forms of media; and (4) understand the hazardous effects of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. If successful, this project could be an integral part of comprehensive prevention efforts for young adolescents which will help them to recognize and resist the powerful influences of alcohol and tobacco advertising.
