Risks for sexually transmitted diseases -- a pilot study

The purpose of this project is to generate a detailed description of the sexual behavior of the U.S. adult population. This information is of importance to understanding the epidemiology of sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV-related disease, as well as reproductive and psychological health. The only scientifically rigorous study ever completed on this subject was the 1948 Kinsey report, and no studies have collected detailed national data on sexual behaviors known to place individuals at risk of HIV infection. A national random sample of 1,500 adults will be interviewed to elicit information related to sexual practices. Strictly confidential personal interviews will be conducted by trained, professional interviewers using a questionnaire and survey methods developed under grants from the U.S. NICHD. A survey of sexual behavior of the general population has been urged widely by the medical and scientific communities, and this funded survey has been extensively reviewed by both scientists and members of the lay public.
