Program to treat and reduce malnutrition among homeless children

The purpose of this project is the demonstration of a service model to improve the nutritional status of pregnant women and children at high risk by virtue of being homeless. The model has two components: (1) the implementation of a therapeutic program of assessment and treatment of homeless children and pregnant women at nutritional risk in Boston; and (2) the development and dissemination of a preventive nutrition education program for providers and clients of homeless clinics. Boston City Hospital's Failure to Thrive Program will build upon its existing relationship with Boston's voluntary food program, Project Bread, and establish one with Boston's Health Care for the Homeless Program. If successful locally, the grantee will provide technical assistance and training to replication sites across the country through a second phase of funding.
