The purpose of this project is to help Stop Teenage Addiction to Tobacco (STAT) implement community-wide projects to reduce adolescent tobacco use in Perth Amboy, New Jersey; Springfield, Massachusetts; San Jose, California; and Seattle Washington. STAT organizations, will be developed in each of these communities and will be directed by local well known clinicians or health administrators. A network of volunteers will be established to implement interventions such as: (1) conducting surveys to determine availability of tobacco to young people; (2) developing a coordinated community education and public awareness campaign; (3) organizing community forums to provide information on health related risks of smoking; and (4) working with local government officials to ensure enforcement of ordinances; and (5) develop a partnership with local businesses, newspapers, etc., to eliminate the sale of tobacco to underage youth and voluntarily refrain from cigarette advertising promotion.
