Evaluation of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholars Program

The Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program was designed to augment clinical training by providing new skills and perspectives necessary to achieving leadership positions both within and outside the walls of academia in the 21st century.This grant supports an assessment of the Clinical Scholars Program. The assessment team will seek to answer the following questions: (1) What are the contributions of the Clinical Scholars Program to the careers of the scholars and to the fields in which they work? (2) What is the current and likely future demand for individuals with Clinical Scholar training? (3) What is the demand by young physicians for Clinical Scholar training? and (4) How can the Clinical Scholars Program be improved? This last question covers a range of issues, including consideration of the program policy requiring each site to adopt priority areas, the feasibility of linking these priorities to Foundation goals, and the expansion or contraction of the number of program sites. Data on all sites will be collected from site visits, interviews with key informants, and the review of documents and program records kept by Foundation staff. The assessment is expected to produce a report that will identify the complex set of understandings of the program's mission held by all program staff, as well as ascertain whether the Program is producing scholars that fit those expectations.
