Strengthening Hospital Nursing: A Program to Improve Patient Care

The Program, Strengthening Hospital Nursing: A Program to Improve Patient Care, jointly funded with Pew Charitable Trusts, was designed to encourage hospitals to undertake institution-wide restructuring in order to provide better patient care by improving nursing services.St. Luke's Hospitals-MeritCare is a private, urban, teaching hospital with 404 beds. Goals include creating a culture in which employees epitomise the MeritCare commitments; empowering employees at work-unit level to be customer-centered; integrating the organization's needs with employee's growth and development needs; redesigning the role of RN to perform professional activities in clinical, consultative, research, administrative and educational realms. Strategies to achieve these goals are implementing intervention plans at work unit levels to address cultural gaps; implementing house-wide employee development program designed to enhance customer orientation; incorporating personal growth and development plans within the performance review process; employing a management engineer to assess direct caregiver roles system wide and assist in role design. Anticipated outcomes are: work units will demonstrate increased internalization of MeritCare commitments; customers will be better served and outcomes improved; ongoing access to skill development/growth opportunities will be enhanced with preceptors on all units; RNs will spend more time in direct care activities.
