Strengthening Hospital Nursing: A Program to Improve Patient Care

The Program, Strengthening Hospital Nursing: A Program to Improve Patient Care, jointly funded with Pew Charitable Trusts, was designed to encourage hospitals to undertake institution-wide restructuring in order to provide better patient care by improving nursing services.Harbor-UCLA Medical Center is an urban, public, teaching hospital with 553 beds. They plan to implement a Community Design Model (CDM) in which all stakeholders are encouraged and expected to take leadership initiatives in ensuring quality patient care. The critical element of the community is a conscientiousness of the shared goal of effective patient care. The objectives of the CDM include: (1) creation of mini-communities of patient care teams (identify specific mini-communities, develop strategies to involve students, and develop community orientation programs); 2) establishment of a leadership culture of continuous improvement (appoint board of directors, develop tracking mechanism and job descriptions); and (3) building a user friendly environment that empowers stakeholders (mini community development sessions; community handbook, directories, cross-campus linkage). Mini-communities of patient care teams will be created to facilitate cost-effective, efficient and satisfying service designs for patients.
