As one of the institutions receiving planning grants under the Foundation's Preparing Physicians for the Future: A Program in Medical Education, the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine will: (1) centralize governance of their educational programs in the office of the dean in order to effect needed changes; (2) develop plans for restructuring the content and process of basic science education; and (3) develop plans for new clinical experiences outside the tertiary care hospital. A plan for implementation will be developed, including financing strategies, by the end of the 18-month planning period.
