The Foundation's program, Improving the Quality of Hospital Care, was designed to help individual hospitals develop the means to identify and address problems in the quality of patient care. This is a grant to develop a consortium of nine public hospitals in California, represented by the Public Hospital Institute (a research subsidiary of California Association of Public Hospitals). A resource center will be developed at the Institute for Health Policy Studies at UCSF. The project objectives are: (1) share information regarding quality assurance and improvement activities within the consortium; (2) draw in new information for consortium members on quality improvement methods; (3) respond to consortium members' requests for information and for support on quality assurance; and (4) develop and conduct two innovative demonstration projects in consortium hospitals. The expected outcomes are an operational consortium with a resource center serving the needs of member hospitals and a detailed plan for consortium members to work collectively and individually to improve quality of care.
