The Foundation's program, Improving the Quality of Hospital Care, was designed to help individual hospitals develop the means to identify and address problems in the quality of patient care. This grant is to develop a consortium of seven small community hospitals on the Delmarva Peninsula. Held together by their geographic bonds, member hospitals will receive resources from the Hospital Association, using a resource center director to channel resources. The objectives of the project are: (1) develop and implement the structures (committees), processes, and hospital leadership for participation in the consortium; (2) assess the capacity and needs of hospitals regarding improvement of quality; (3) through a series of meetings, develop strategies for quality improvement in member hospitals; and (4) using hospital-level data, share information between hospitals and identify common problems and best practices for quality improvement. The expected outcomes will be: (1) a functional consortium with a resource center that operates to meet the needs of member hospitals; and (2) a viable plan for the members to improve quality of care through the use of consortium resources.
