Regional B.S.N. training program for rural nurses
The Foundation's Nursing Services Manpower Development Program was designed to encourage and test new approaches for attracting people into the field of nursing services and to advance the knowledge and skills of both new entrants and those already in service.This grant supports the establishment of a regional educational program to enable nurses in rural northwest Iowa to complete requirements for the BSN. Through a collaborative effort with the University of Iowa School of Nursing, the Iowa Hospital Association and Spencer Municipal Hospital, Iowa Lakes Community College will plan, develop, and implement a "distant learning" program that will utilize satellite hook-ups and a "voice-mail" WATS line at hospital-based sites for course instruction and advisement of RNs in a six-county region. Declining funding from RWJF will partially support project administration, a faculty facilitator, a student advisor, supplies and educational materials. There are 144 nurses in the area who are definitely interested in obtaining the BSN. This program has significant potential as a model for reducing the scarcity, in rural areas, of nurses with this level of professional education.
