Healthy Futures Program

The Foundation's Healthy Future's program was designed to help Southern states reduce their high rate of infant mortality by systematically improving health care for pregnant women and their infants.This is the second-phase grant under the four-year Healthy Futures Program. A major focus of years 3 and 4 will be to continue efforts to reduce the infant mortality rate to 8.1 in 1992 and increase the number of women who receive prenatal care in the first trimester to 80 percent in 1992. During years 3 and 4, West Virginia will increase the number of nurse midwife obstetrical providers through expansion of the LAP training project and through the development of a nurse midwifery school at Marshall University; evaluate and refine the PROPAS risk assessment tool; increase Medicaid obstetrical care reimbursement rates and implement a Medicaid case management and health support services package; and expand Medicaid eligibility to 133 percent of the poverty level for young children.
