This grant supports the establishment of a university-based cancer institute for the prevention, treatment, and control of cancer in Central New Jersey and other regions of the State. A cluster of resources in Central New Jersey for the advancement of research, teaching, and patient care in the cancer field will be combined in a single unified structure under the leadership of the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and involve all of its affiliated institutions. Associate directors for basic sciences research, clinical research, administration, plus initial faculty will be recruited. A scientific advisory board of prominent investigators in the cancer field will be named. An inter-institutional committee structure will be established. In-patient space in the two hospitals (Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital and Saint Peter's Medical Center) will be renovated and construction of new out-patient space will begin. Uniform treatment protocols will be developed for all oncology services and will include community physicians. Linkages with national research consortia will be expanded to increase the availability of experimental treatments.
