Program for adolescent and young adult women at risk of HIV infection

This grant will enable PPNYC to expand its program to reach and help two groups in New York City at extreme risk to HIV infection and transmission. These groups consist of adolescents and young adults, especially females, from low-income minority background who are largely homeless and heavily involved in prostitution and IV drug use. PPNYC will initiate three activities to contain and reduce the ravages of the HIV epidemic among this large socially isolated and alienated New York City population: (1) extension of its current adolescent program in the South Bronx to include young adults in their 20s -- over three years, PPNYC expects to enroll 1,200 new clients and provide them with an estimated 14,200 service encounters; (2) development of a case management system to ensure services for all HIV positive clients -- they expect to manage 1,200 clients and conduct 750 group counseling sessions; and (3) establishment of a communications program to replicate the PPNYC approach to the HIV epidemic among other family planning agencies (and other types of health and human services agencies) elsewhere in the country.
