Fighting Back: Community Initiatives to Reduce Demand for Illegal Drugs and Alcohol

The Foundation's program, Fighting Back: Community Initiatives to Reduce Demand for Illegal Drugs and Alcohol, was designed to provide support of community-wide efforts to reduce alcohol and drug abuse through public awareness strategies, prevention, early identification, and treatment interventions.In July 1988, the Foundation authorized a $26.4-million Program of Community Initiatives to Reduce Demand for Illegal Drugs and Alcohol. The objective of the initiatives is to show that by pulling their resources into a single unified effort to reduce demand, communities can begin to solve the problem of drug and alcohol abuse. This project is one of 15 to receive a planning and development grant of up to two years (Phase I). At the conclusion of the grant, a plan, which can be implemented, should be completed to reduce demand. Up to eight will be recommended for implementation grants.
