The Foundation's program, Local Funding Partnerships, was designed to continue a matching grants program to establish partnerships between RWJF and local grant makers in support of innovative, community-based projects that improve health and health care for vulnerable populations.Under this project, the Respite Ministry will expand its activities to reach minority and disadvantaged groups by establishing a network of collaborating respite care programs. The goal of the program is to reduce the family stress of caring for frail elderly or disabled adults. Trained volunteers provide companionship and supervision for the incapacitated dependent family member and emotional support for the caregivers. It is expected that 50 families will be served in 1989; 75 in 1990; and 110 in 1991. The number of volunteers trained by an RN will increase to meet the increasing demand for services. New collaborating programs will be added to increase minority and disadvantaged caregiving families. Funding partners include: St. Mary's Medical Center, Col.L.C. Christensen Charitable & Religious Foundation, Golden "K" Kiwanis Club, Racine County Area Foundation, Inc., and various religious groups. The program will also receive public funding for 1989 through the Racine County Human Services Department.
