This grant supports Phase II of Project L.I.N.C. (Ladders in Nursing Careers), an initiative designed to provide educational opportunities to upgrade currently practicing nurse aides and LPNs to LPNs and RNs in New York City. The initial funding provided for the formation of a pilot consortium (encompassing Bronx and Upper Manhattan) that has enrolled 48 participants into schools as of January, l989. The objectives of Phase II are to: (1) initiate the remaining four consortia which encompass the rest of the city, and (2) educate a total of 300 nurse aides and LPNs. Program elements to support these predominantly low-income, disadvantaged students include on-site instruction, remedial education, personal counseling, review courses, and loan/service pay backs.
