This support will enable the grantee to design an initiative to provide a partial solution to the professional nurse shortage problem. This initiative, called Project L.I.N.C. (Ladders in Nursing Careers) is aimed at increasing the supply of RNs and LPNs by forming networks among existing nursing educational programs, hospitals, and long-term care facilities to upgrade currently practicing nurse's aides, and LPNs to RNs. Thirty-six institutions and nearly 1,300 LPNs and nurse aides who are potentially qualified to upgrade to the RN level have been identified as interested in participating in this project. Activities to be accomplished include: (1) finalizing the networks of hospitals, long-term care facilities, and nursing schools; (2) developing curricula for faculty development; (3) convening a Steering Committee to provide guidance on the design and implementation of the initiative; and (4) completing the acquisition of funding from the state, participating hospitals, and long-term care facilities, etc.
