Program to Improve Maternal and Infant Health in New Jersey

The Foundation's Program to Improve Maternal and Infant Health in New Jersey was designed to support new efforts within the State to improve maternal, perinatal, and infant care.The principal objective of this project is to improve maternal and infant health through the implementation of uniform risk assessment throughout the region and through increased enrollment in early prenatal care. By 1992, it is expected that less than 4 percent of infant births will be LBW and a 40 percent reduction in long-term morbidity will occur. The project will establish a central clearinghouse for perinatal information, development and coordinated professional and public education programs; ensure on-site availability of perinatal expertise for high-risk pregnancies at all consortium hospitals; increase regionwide access to perinatal clinic services; establish a data bank of outcome data for evaluation purposes; expand on-site genetic counseling to all regional hospitals; establish counseling services for child abuse in at-risk families whose infants were born in consortium hospitals and ensure that all hospitals in the region can provide newborn resuscitation and stabilization at all times.
