In Joplin, Missouri, Social Media Is A Critical Disaster-Relief Tool
Social media is proving to be a critical tool in Joplin, Missouri in the aftermath of the devastating tornado on Sunday, especially to connect Joplin’s citizens with disaster-related services:
- Attendees were able to RSVP via Facebook for a community meeting held today.
- Twitter feeds were established as information resources—Key feeds include: the State of Missouri, @MoGov, the Greater Ozarks Red Cross, @ozarksredcross, and Fema Administrator Craig Fugate @craigatFEMA. The hashtags #MOhaves and #MOneeds are also being used for donations and requests.
- Disaster-related Facebook pages, frequently updated, include State of Missouri, City of Joplin, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), MoDOT Southwest Region and MoDOT D7 Joplin Group.
- The Missouri Department of Public Safety released a list (PDF) of 232 people still missing and will update the list each day on its website.
Coincidentally, today the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research released an updated version of its Emergency Preparedness Resource Inventory (EPRI) tool, a web-based software to help local, regional and state planners prepare for and respond to emergency situations. The tool is meant to be downloaded and implemented in advance of a disaster to help develop a resource inventory to respond to different types of emergencies.
