New Connections Hosts Panel at Annual Society of Social Work and Research Conference
On January 18, 2014, New Connections hosted a panel discussion session at the 18th Annual Society for Social Work and Research Conference in San Antonio. The title of the session was “Social Work Practice in Light of America’s Changing Demographics,” and featured New Connections alumni Henrika McCoy, PhD, (’09) Sunny Shin, PhD, (’07) and current New Connections grantee Adrian Aguilera, PhD, (’11).

Center for Health Policy at Meharry Medical College Announces Speakers for Lecture Series
The Center for Health Policy at Meharry Medical College is pleased to announce the confirmed speakers for the 2014 National Scholars’ Current Issues in Health Policy Lecture Series. Held every spring semester, the lectures help to familiarize Health Policy Fellows and Scholars, the entire Meharry community, and the general public with current and substantive key issues in health policy, health services research, and health disparities research with an emphasis in the social science disciplines of economics, sociology, and political science. This year’s National Scholars include: Robert Fisher, PhD, president of Belmont University (January 29); Rueben C. Warren, DDS, MPH, DrPH, MDiv, executive director of the National Center for Bioethics in Research and Health Care at Tuskegee University (February 12); Lisa C. Dubay, PhD, ScM, senior fellow of the Health Policy Center at the Urban Institute and member of the Center for Health Policy’s National Advisory Board (February 26); J. Nadine Gracia, MD, MSCE, deputy assistant secretary and director of the Office of Minority Health at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (March 26); and Uchenna S. Uchendu, MD, chief officer of the Veterans Health Administration’s Office of Health Equity at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (April 23).

New Connections Releases Its 8th Call for Proposals
The national program office released its 8th round of call for proposals. Finalists will be notified in the summer. This cohort’s grants are scheduled to begin on September 1, 2014.

The National Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education Releases New Collection of Assessment Tools
The National Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education (IPE) has developed an online collection of assessment tools and measurement instruments used for IPE research. Many tools are available for download directly from the center’s website, so you can start using them right away to implement and measure the effects of IPE on learning, quality of care, and health outcomes.
