Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to Announce Multi-Million Dollar Nursing Program on Monday

    • May 30, 2013

Philadelphia, Pa.—Leaders from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF), the Independence Blue Cross Foundation, and the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing will host a reception to announce an unprecedented national nursing program on Monday, June 3rd.

Who: Leaders from RWJF, the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing, and the Independence Blue Cross Foundation, including:

  • John Lumpkin, MD, MPH, senior vice president and director of the Health Care Group, RWJF
  • Afaf I. Meleis, PhD, DrPS (hon), FAAN, Margaret Bond Simon Dean of Nursing, University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing
  • Lorina Marshall-Blake, president, Independence Blue Cross Foundation.

What:  A reception to launch a nursing program that will support schools of nursing across the country in helping more nurses get PhDs. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation is investing millions of dollars in the new program, and creating a strategic philanthropic collaborative to engage additional donors. Leaders at the event will discuss the scope of the new program and timing for it to get underway.

When:  4 p.m., Monday, June 3rd.

Where: Carol Elizabeth Ware Lobby, University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing, 418 Curie Blvd., Philadelphia, Pa.

Why:  The country is facing a severe shortage of PhD-prepared nurses, who are uniquely qualified to conduct research, provide nurse leadership, and solve the shortage of nurse faculty. Right now, fewer than 3,000 of the nation’s more than 3 million nurses have doctoral degrees in nursing, and many of them have DNPs, not PhDs, which prepare nurses to conduct research and teach. The average age at which nurses get their PhDs in the United States is 46–13 years older than PhD earners in other fields.

NOTE: The reception is by-invitation-only, but open to credentialed media.
