Paul Kuehnert, MS, RN, currently county health officer and executive director for Health for Kane County, Ill., is joining the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) as senior program officer and director of RWJF’s Public Health team.
Kuehnert will join the Foundation in June.
“We are delighted to have Paul join us at RWJF,” said Foundation President and CEO Risa Lavizzo-Mourey, MD, MBA. “Paul brings extraordinary leadership and experience to our strong public health team at a time of tremendous opportunity as public health builds for the future and expands partnerships across health, health care, business, and policy to improve health for families and communities.”
For nearly 20 years, Kuehnert has provided executive leadership to private and governmental organizations to build and improve systems to address complex health and human services needs. Kuehnert has served in his current role in Kane County since 2007. He leads four departments: Health, Animal Control, Emergency Management, and Community Reinvestment. Kane County has a population of 515,000.
Through Kuehnert’s leadership, Kane County achieved many significant accomplishments during his tenure:
- Kane County Health Department became the first in the state to convene a formal partnership between county hospitals, the county's two largest United Ways, and its largest local Mental Health Board to jointly undertake a comprehensive community health needs assessment and planning process.
- The county initiated the Make Kane County “Fit for Kids” campaign to reverse the epidemic of childhood obesity, and established the public-private partnership “Fit for Kids” Consortium, which forged the Fit Kids 2020 Plan.
- Kane County’s Health, Development and Transportation departments collaborated on the Quality of Kane comprehensive plan. Kane will be the first County in Illinois to have its health plan and priorities integrated with transportation and land use planning and priorities as part of its Healthy People, Healthy Living, Healthy Communities 2040 Master Land Use Plan.
- Kane established a comprehensive wellness program for government workers, resulting in demonstrable improvements to the health and well-being of employees, and marked cost savings.
Kuehnert previously served as deputy state health officer and deputy director of Maine’s Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
The Foundation’s incoming Public Health team director is a pediatric nurse practitioner, with a Master of Science in Public Health Nursing from the University of Illinois-Chicago. In 2004, Kuehnert was named a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Executive Nurse Fellow.
