Community Health Leaders Holds Annual Meeting
The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Community Health Leaders held its annual meeting October 13–15 in New Orleans, focusing on this year’s meeting theme, “Community Health Activists & the Legal Profession—Partners & Collaborators to Improve Health & Health Care.” Many of the leaders collaborate with legal professionals, and several leaders are attorneys. The plenary session speakers were Ellen Lawton, executive director of the National Center for Medical-Legal Partnerships, and Nisha Agarwal, director of the Health Justice Program for New York Lawyers for the Public Interest. This was the fourth year that the Community Health Leaders annual meeting hosted leaders from all years, and over 100 leaders attended.
Community Health Leaders Hosts Webinar
The Community Health Leaders Research and Evaluation work group hosted its second webinar for leaders on September 16. More than 19 leaders participated in “How to Conduct a Focus Group Interview,” which was presented by Melanie Spector, Ed.D, M.S, L.P.C./L.A.D.C., (‘02). Spector noted that conducting a focus group interview “requires careful thought as well as a touch of art and science, and is an addition to the research-and-evaluation toolkit of skills. Focus groups help program developers figure things out, and make the process fun and rewarding.” To listen and see a recording of the live event, click here.
Health & Society Scholars Participate in International Urban Health Conference
Several Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health & Society Scholars participated in the ninth annual International Urban Health Conference, held October 27–29 at the New York Academy of Medicine, which serves as the national program office for the Health & Society Scholars program. The theme of the conference was “Good Governance for Healthy Cities,” with a focus on the positive consequences in urban health interventions, as well as the social and public health policies that are required to address these issues. Health & Society Scholars who presented at the conference included Andrew Papachristos, Ph.D., (‘10) who discussed rethinking crime epidemics among Boston area gangs; and Marilyn Sinkewicz, Ph.D., (‘05) who presented on rethinking policy approaches to the multiple determinants of health by drawing lessons from President Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal policies.
