Public health received significant attention at this year’s AcademyHealth Annual Research Meeting in Boston, June 27 to June 29. Each year the AcademyHealth conference is a key national forum for discussion about the organization, financing and management of health services. The event, which drew more than 2,300 attendees, delved into a range of public health disciplines and also included a meeting of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation-supported AcademyHealth Public Health Systems Research Interest Group.

  • Douglas R. Wholey, Ph.D., M.B.A., professor of health policy and management at the University of Minnesota School of Public Health. Wholey’s article, “Public Health Systems: A Social Networks Perspective” (published in Health Services Research) was selected as the Article of the year by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and AcademyHealth. The award recognizes the best scientific work that the field of PHSR has produced and published in 2009.
  • Debra Perez, Ph.D., senior program officer at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, on PHSR presentations at the 2010 AcademyHealth conference.
  • Mary Davis, DrPh., director of evaluation services at the North Carolina Institute for Public Health, on the impact of public health accreditation in North Carolina.
  • Glen Mays, Ph.D., professor of health policy and management at the University of Arkansas College for Medical Sciences on the field of public health services and systems research.
