The following is a statement by Risa Lavizzo-Mourey, M.D., M.B.A., president and CEO of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation:

“First Lady Michelle Obama brings a new level of leadership and energy to the movement to reverse the epidemic of childhood obesity. Her prominence and credibility—not only as our nation’s First Lady, but also as a mother—already have drawn extraordinary public attention to the issue. She is now ready to turn that attention into action, and for that we thank her and offer our support.

“The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation is pleased to join with The California Endowment, Kaiser-Permanente, Nemours, the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and the Alliance for a Healthier Generation—our long-time partners in creating healthier communities and schools—to establish and support an independent, nonpartisan organization that will expand and accelerate our work to prevent childhood obesity. The purpose of the new Partnership for a Healthier America is unique: to bring together the public, private and nonprofit leaders who must be part of the movement; to secure their sustained, measurable commitments to reversing the epidemic; and to track the impact of those commitments to ensure greater accountability throughout this important movement.

“We look forward to working with Mrs. Obama and all others leading the way to safeguard the health of our children—and our nation.”
