On January 20, 2010, health, nursing and other leaders joined journalists at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., to hear experts discuss a first-of-its-kind survey, Nursing Leadership from Bedside to Boardroom: Opinion Leaders’ Perceptions.

The event featured: Risa Lavizzo-Mourey, M.D., M.B.A, president and CEO of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF); Frank Newport, Ph.D., editor-in-chief, The Gallup Report; Pennsylvania Gov. Edward G. Rendell; Reed V. Tuckson, M.D., F.A.C.P., executive vice president and chief of medical affairs, UnitedHealth Group; and Gail Wilensky, Ph.D., senior fellow at Project HOPE, former administrator of the Health Care Financing Administration (now the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services).

A panel of nurse leaders, led by RWJF senior adviser for nursing Susan Hassmiller, Ph.D., R.N., F.A.A.N, reacted to the findings.

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation—Gallup study examines the views of more than 1,500 opinion leaders about the role nurses are playing, and should play, in our health care system, in particular with regard to improving access and quality, and containing costs.
