Locked playgrounds and barren ball fields. Sidewalks that are cracked, uneven hazards—if they even exist. Convenience stores without a piece of fruit in sight but plenty of chips and candy.

The neighborhoods at the center of Healthy Kids, Healthy Communities recognize the conditions that keep many children from eating nutritious foods and being physically active. And they’re committed to changing their environments to support healthier lifestyles and prevent obesity.

These scenes from more than a dozen of the 50 cities and counties in RWJF’s national program illustrate the kinds of problems every community is confronting.
