Policy-Makers Talk About Childhood Obesity and How Their Communities are Tackling the Epidemic

They spoke at a summit organized by Leadership for Healthy Communities.

    • November 2, 2009

In May 2009, more than 250 state and local policy-makers and childhood obesity-prevention advocates participated in second childhood obesity prevention summit organized by Leadership for Healthy Communities (LHC), a national program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Rallying behind the theme "Building a Bridge to Policy Action," the summit called on policy leaders nationwide to advance policy and environmental changes to support healthy eating and active living in their communities. The summit focused particular attention on collaborative approaches that address childhood obesity among vulnerable populations disproportionately affected by the epidemic. Speakers and panelists included representatives from the federal government, states, cities, counties and school districts, who presented and shared their innovative work in building healthier communities for children and their families.

During the summit, eight pioneering policy-makers from across the nation and from various levels of government sat down for in-depth interviews to discuss the childhood obesity epidemic and how they are helping to fight it in their communities. Anchored around six key issues, the following two-minute videos capture policy-makers describing their motivation to prevent and reduce childhood obesity, the strategies they’ve helped to implement, the progress they’ve witnessed, the critical role that policy-makers play in reversing the epidemic, the support they’ve received from the LHC national program office and the vision that guides their efforts to support healthy families and communities.
