When Massachusetts policy-makers sought to implement near-universal coverage in the spring of 2006, the occasion was marked with a range of opinions on the likely outcome of the sweeping initiative.

As the years go by, we learn more and more about how the New England experiment fares, as bright ideas and ideals come face to face with cold market realities. Would costs become unwieldy? How would employers respond to the mandate? Would public insurance crowd out private programs? Could the Massachusetts experience serve as a model for other states and what elements might be used in possible federal health care reform?

We offer research and analysis of the Massachusetts reform in numerous publications and RWJF-supported journal articles.
