The Minnesota Supportive Housing and Managed Care Pilot

Executive Summary

On June 18, 2009, President Barack Obama remarked, “It is simply unacceptable for individuals, children, families, and our nation’s veterans to be faced with homelessness in this country.”

Every day, more and more families and children are joining the ranks of the homeless. Families are the fastest growing segment of the homeless population. They are our neighbors, co-workers and children’s classmates. In this economy, governments and communities are looking more urgently for solutions to address the increasing rates of homelessness. And there is one proven model that holds the potential to end homelessness—permanently.

This 60-minute Webinar shares the positive results of a five-year study of the supportive housing services model. Conducted in St. Paul, Minnesota at a program called Hearth Connection, the Minnesota Supportive Housing and Managed Care Pilot Study is the nation's most comprehensive study to date—and the results validate the supportive housing services model and prove that supportive housing is scalable. The study showed that the costs to get participants into permanent long-term housing were reduced or neutral forfamilies and children in comparison to a group using more traditional and temporary services.

The Webinar summarizes the study’s findings and describes the importance of the supportive housing services model and how it can be scaled at a regional and national level.
