Supporting the Convergence Center's Project on Nutrition and Wellness to increase U.S. consumers' demand for healthful dietary choices

This initiative will support the Project on Nutrition and Wellness in seeking to reduce and prevent childhood obesity and other nutrition-related chronic diseases by increasing the demand for healthier dietary choices among U.S. consumers and identifying cross-sector strategies that will build marketplace incentives for the production and marketing of healthier foods. The Convergence Center for Policy Resolution will use two interlocking strategies to achieve these goals: (1) convening roundtable and workgroup discussions to create a forum that fosters trust, cooperation and shared understanding among a diverse group of public health, public interest and private-sector stakeholders whose collective knowledge and influence can impact nutritional health in the United States on a widespread basis; and (2) analyzing existing consumer market research to identify innovative solutions for addressing marketplace and consumer barriers that adversely affect consumer demand for healthier choices, with particular attention to lower-income and racial/ethnic communities and populations at highest risk for obesity. Deliverables include a road map of recommendations for public and private-sector alliances and actions; a synthesis of existing consumer market research on factors affecting household food choices that could be harnessed to change business practices and consumer preferences; and a report and multimedia materials for disseminating lessons learned.
