Florida City Launches Program to Stem Childhood Obesity

In an effort to address childhood obesity, several public agencies and community organizations in Largo, Fla., will launch a project to improve the exercise and nutrition habits of the city's children, the Largo Leader reports. According to data collected by area elementary schools, 32 percent of children in grades one through three were overweight or at risk of becoming overweight during the 2006-2007 school year, up from 28.8 percent one year earlier. The Heart of Largo Eat Smart, Play Hard program is a partnership of the city of Largo, Pinellas County Health Department, Largo Recreation, Parks and Art, Pinellas County Schools and several community groups. It will foster collaboration to ensure that a consistent message promoting exercise and healthy eating is being delivered to children. For example, after-school programs will provide quick, healthy recipes students can take home to their parents. Meanwhile, officials’ future plans include creating a network of walking trails to improve opportunities for physical activity (Caldwell, Largo Leader, 1/14/09).
